"The world of work is evolving rapidly, and we must keep pace. Digital transformation is not a future concept—it is happening now. By integrating digital tools, we can enhance efficiency, improve service delivery, and boost overall workforce productivity," said Issa Sarboko Makarani, the Director of Planning, Policy, and Training Research at the Ministry of Communication, Transport, and Communication of the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar.
Makarani made these remarks while opening the International Digital Workplace Summit (IDWS) on behalf of the Special Guest, Dr. Khalid Salum Mohamed, Minister of Infrastructure, Communication, and Transport of Zanzibar.
The summit, which kicked off today, February 27, 2025, in Arusha, Tanzania, has brought together HR and administration officers from various African nations to discuss workplace digital transformation.
He highlighted that both the Government of Tanzania under President Samia Suluhu Hassan and the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar under President Dr. Hussein Mwinyi are prioritizing digital investment to foster innovation and ensure that the workforce is equipped for the demands of the digital era.
From Paper-Based Systems to Digital Efficiency
Makarani urged HR and administration officers to move away from outdated paper-based systems and embrace digital platforms that enhance work efficiency.
"The modern work environment demands efficiency. By adopting digital systems, we can enhance service delivery, minimize bureaucracy, and accelerate decision-making,"he noted.
He explained that technological advancements have prompted the government to organize these training sessions to equip HR officers with modern digital skills.
"This shift will not only improve performance but also eliminate complacency among employees. Digital tools provide real-time solutions, ensuring accountability and timely execution of duties," he added.
HR Officers as Key Drivers of Digital Transformation
Christopher Kabalika Mwansasu,Chairperson of the Tanzania HR and Administration Professionals Association (THRAPA), emphasized the critical role of HR professionals in spearheading digital workplace adoption.
"HR officers are the backbone of institutional change. They must be equipped with digital knowledge to champion transformation within their organizations," Mwansasu stated.
He pointed out that digital technology is now at the core of workplace efficiency and economic growth.
"The digital revolution is reshaping how we work. HR officers must embrace it to enhance service delivery and drive economic progress,"he added.
Digital Work Systems Transforming Public Service Deliver
Mafunda Sadiki Khamisi, HR Officer at the Zanzibar Water and Energy Regulatory Authority, highlighted the practical benefits of digital systems in public administration.
"This summit is strengthening our expertise in using digital tools to streamline HR functions. The shift to digital is essential for improved efficiency," Khamisi stated.
Similarly, Basuta Milanzi, a Senior HR Officer from the Agricultural Inputs Trust Fund, emphasized that digital transformation is no longer an option but a necessity.
"Without digital systems, work processes become inefficient. These trainings are crucial in ensuring that we utilize technology for better performance," said Milanzi.
He noted that many organizations are now replacing traditional paper-based performance evaluations, such as OPRAS (Open Performance Review and Appraisal System), with digital platforms, making performance tracking more effective.
A Pan-African Collaboration for a Digital Future
The two-day summit, which runs from February 27 to February 28, 2025, has attracted participants from across the continent, including South Africa, Ghana, Ethiopia, Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania Mainland, and Zanzibar.
Organized by THRAPA, the event aims to promote digital workplace adoption and strengthen HR professionals’ ability to manage digital transformation effectively.
As technology continues to evolve, HR professionals are being called upon to lead digital integration in workplaces. The 'International Digital Workplace Summit' serves as a vital platform for fostering discussions, sharing best practices, and preparing HR leaders for the future of work.
