Dr. Nchimbi: A Distinguished Diplomat's Journey from Ambassador to Key Political Leadership in Tanzania

Ambassador Dr. Emanuel Nchimbi has been appointed as the Secretary-General of the Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM), succeeding Daniel Chongolo.

According to the CCM's National Executive Committee (NEC) Ideology, Publicity, and Training Secretary, Paul Makonda, the decision was made on January 15, 2023, in Zanzibar under the leadership of President Samia Suluhu Hassan.



Nchimbi takes over from Daniel Chongolo, who recently resigned, citing social media defamation. Chongolo submitted his resignation letter to President Samia, who accepted it.

A seasoned political and diplomatic figure, Dr. Nchimbi graduated from IDM Mzumbe in 1997, later becoming a member of the CCM National Executive Committee (NEC) in 1998 and subsequently elected Chairman of the Youth League of CCM (UVCCM) in 1998. He has a master's degree in business administration from Mzumbe University (2001-2003), specializing in banking and finance.


His career includes employment at the National Environmental Management Council (NEMC) from 1998 to 2003. Dr. Nchimbi served as the District Commissioner of Bunda from 2003 to 2005 and again from 2008 to 2011. He earned his Ph.D. from Mzumbe University during this period.


Dr. Nchimbi, married to Jane with three children, also ventured into parliamentary politics, winning the Songea Urban constituency in 2005 with CCM's substantial support. He subsequently held ministerial positions, including Deputy Minister of Information, Culture, and Sports (2006) and Minister of Defense and National Service until November 2010.


His career continued with ministerial appointments in Information, Culture, and Sports until May 2012, when he was transferred to the Ministry of Home Affairs. He resigned from the government in December 2013.


In 2017, the late President John Pombe Magufuli appointed him as Tanzania's Ambassador to Brazil, and later, President Samia appointed him as Tanzania's Ambassador to Egypt before his recent return.
