FAO PLEDGES SUPPORT FOR TANZANIA'S AGRICULTURAL SECTOR - MAJALIWA

 


As part of its strategies to promote and develop the agricultural sector.Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa has stated that the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has pledged to support the efforts of the Tanzanian government in promoting and developing the agricultural sector.


He mentioned that the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania and the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar have plans to make Tanzania a major food producer for both domestic consumption and export by 2030.


The Prime Minister made these remarks yesterday evening (Monday, October 16, 2023) during the opening of the World Food Forum, which runs from October 16 to October 20, 2023. He addressed the forum on behalf of President Samia Suluhu Hassan.


Before the opening of the forum, which involved Heads of State and Government, the Prime Minister participated in the celebration of the 78th anniversary since the establishment of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).


"In addition to the efforts we have made internally to involve youth and women to ensure that we increase technology use and fertilizer application in agriculture, as well as involving the private sector, we have decided to collaborate with FAO through its Director-General, and they have promised to support us in the agricultural sector."


He stated that the Government continues to strengthen various infrastructures, including the construction of modern railways, roads, and rural electrification to facilitate agricultural activities. "Other improvements include the construction of industries to produce agricultural inputs and encouraging farmers to use modern technology in production."



On his part, FAO Director-General, Dr. Qu Dongyu, mentioned that Tanzania has significant opportunities to develop the agricultural sector and the blue economy. Therefore, their organization is ready to collaborate with Tanzania in providing technical assistance and promoting food production systems
