The African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights on Monday, 1 June 2026, officially opened its 81st Ordinary Session at its Seat in Arusha, United Republic of Tanzania. The Session is scheduled to run until 26 June 2026.
During this four-week period, the Court will deliberate on several pending judicial matters to fulfill its core mandate of protecting human and peoples’ rights across the African continent.
Opening the Session, the President of the Court, Justice Blaise Tchikaya, welcomed the Judges and underscored the critical importance of their upcoming work. He noted that the Court remains actively engaged in various initiatives within and beyond the continent to strengthen human rights protections.
The President expressed strong hope that the deliberations would directly address the urgent legal needs of Africa.
“I trust that the work we undertake during this Session will respond to the pressing demands of justice on our continent and contribute meaningfully to the realization of the rights and freedoms guaranteed under the African Charter and other relevant human rights instruments,” President Tchikaya stated.
Key highlights of the 81st Session include:
- Judicial Decisions: The Court is expected to deliver four judgments on 5 June 2026, which were adopted during its previous 80th Ordinary Session.
- Milestone Commemoration: The Session coincides with the ongoing, year-long #AfricanCourtAt20 activities, marking two decades of advancing regional justice.
