TAWA Controls Crocodile That Caused Panic in Buchosa Kahunda Village Erupts in Cheers and Celebrations

Officials from the Tanzania Wildlife Management Authority (TAWA), in collaboration with residents of Kahunda Village in Katwe Ward, Buchosa District, Sengerema, Mwanza, successfully captured and neutralized a crocodile that had caused panic in the village for nearly a week.

The reptile was controlled before it could cause harm to humans.

The incident occurred on October 3, 2024, after villagers alerted TAWA officers from the Lake Zone office in Mwanza.

The officers quickly responded and successfully neutralized the dangerous animal in accordance with the law.

Residents of Kahunda stated that the crocodile had been terrorizing the area for nearly a week, preying on livestock such as ducks, chickens, and dogs at the village’s landing site and in nearby Zabaga Village.

This situation had left villagers in fear, disrupting their daily activities and creating a sense of insecurity around the lake.

Kahunda Village Chairperson, Athumani Wambura, expressed his gratitude to the government and the TAWA officers for their efforts in protecting the community.

He acknowledged the institution's role in safeguarding the lives of residents, particularly against dangerous wildlife like crocodiles and hippos.

"I must say, we are very grateful to these wildlife officers (TAWA). What they have done is significant for our people. In one way or another, we now have peace after controlling this animal, which posed a great threat. In recent years, these animals have killed more than three people in Kahunda Village," said Athumani Wambura.

TAWA’s spokesperson, Beatus Maganja, praised the villagers for their cooperation, which contributed to the successful operation.

He also urged residents to continue taking precautions when conducting their activities around the lake and to follow the guidance provided by wildlife experts. He further assured them that the government had allocated funds to add two more cages in Buchosa District to address the ongoing challenges posed by wildlife in the area.
