Government Affirms Support for Civil Society Organizations

Professor Kitila Mkumbo, the Minister of Planning and Investment, has reaffirmed the Tanzanian government's commitment to collaborating with Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) and assured that it will not obstruct their development efforts.

Speaking at the opening of Civil Society Organizations Week  in Arusha, September 9, 2024, Professor Mkumbo highlighted the government's openness to receiving constructive feedback and innovative ideas that could enhance development and unlock new opportunities both domestically and internationally.

The Minister urged CSOs to actively engage with the government to address emerging challenges and explore both local and global market opportunities to drive economic growth.

He emphasized that the government’s primary goal is to ensure the well-being of all citizens and called for collaborative efforts to achieve the goals outlined in the National Development Vision 2050, particularly in sectors such as education, infrastructure, and reliable energy.

“CSOs should represent community challenges and work towards solutions rather than merely criticizing the government without clearly identifying the issues that need to be addressed,” Professor Mkumbo stated.

He also highlighted the crucial role of reliable electricity in national development, citing the Julius Nyerere Hydropower Project as a significant initiative expected to increase electricity availability, boost economic growth through local manufacturing, and facilitate exports. The project is anticipated to support private sector partnerships, especially in agriculture.

The government has reassured private investors and CSOs that there will be no undue barriers to investing in various sectors. This policy is intended to foster development and economic growth.

Dr. Stigmata Tenga, President of the Foundation For Civil Society (FCS), stressed that progress in Tanzania depends on the contributions of CSOs, which advocate for citizens facing challenges in health, education, infrastructure, and access to affordable credit.

He underscored the importance of human resources in achieving development goals.

Elibariki Shammy, the Country Director of TradeMark Africa, announced that the government aims to promote digital business growth by engaging youth and creating supportive environments to help them achieve economic independence through available opportunities.

Justice Rutenge, the Executive Director of CSOs, has affirmed that the organization will continue to work closely with the government to drive citizen development. He urged CSOs to recognize their role and advocate for the governance they seek.

“We aim to overcome barriers in sectors such as education, health, agriculture, good governance, and many others,” Rutenge stated.
