Flood-Hit Residents of Ngorika Ward, Simanjiro District, Call for Urgent Bridge or Ferry Assistance

Residents, particularly those from Nyumba ya Mungu village, are facing dire circumstances as they resort to using a canoe to navigate the flooded areas.

Albert Msole, the Councilor of Ngorika Ward, emphasized the urgent need for assistance during a council meeting of Simanjiro District Council.

Msole highlighted the critical situation at the Nyumba ya Mungu dam, originally constructed between 1964 and 1968 for hydroelectric power, now overflowing from the influx of water sources like Lake Jipe, Kilimanjaro, Kikuletwa River, and Kidawashi dam.

Tragically, a recent incident saw a herder and his cattle submerged in the dam after their canoe capsized, with the herder still missing after eight days.

Moreover, the council's boat is rendered unusable due to engine damage, severely hindering residents' daily economic activities.

Msole stressed that the frequency of such flooding has increased due to climate change, now occurring annually as opposed to every five or ten years.

Baraka Kanunga, the Chairman of Simanjiro District Council, echoed Msole's sentiments, emphasizing the immediate need for district leaders to visit the area firsthand and assess the situation to provide appropriate assistance.
