At the annual general meeting of the Tanzania Tourist Guides Association (TTGA) on May 4, 2024, in Arusha, Secretary-General Robert Max unveiled concerning revelations about the plight of tourist guides in the country.
Max disclosed that a staggering 70% of tourist guides lack formal employment contracts, while only 30% are officially employed. Despite this, the tourism industry remains a vital contributor to the nation's economy, generating 25% of foreign currency and contributing 15% to the national income.
However, many tourist guides grapple with inadequate employment benefits, including the recent cancellation of subsidized health insurance packages, leaving them vulnerable.
Max underscored the urgent need for government intervention to address these pressing issues. He highlighted challenges such as the lack of health insurance coverage and infrastructure deficiencies within national parks, posing safety risks to both guides and tourists.
Dr. Christopher Nzella, representing the Red Cross on the TTGA Board, emphasized the pivotal role of tourist guides and urged the government to prioritize their welfare to safeguard the country's tourism reputation.
Former TTGA Chairman Alifa Msangi expressed optimism about the government's receptiveness to engage with tourist guides and address their grievances, acknowledging Minister Angela Kairuki's commitment to the tourism sector.
In her address, Minister Kairuki lauded Tanzania's tourism achievements, citing a significant increase in tourist arrivals and revenue. She highlighted President Samia's initiatives, including the Royal Tour program, which has bolstered tourist numbers. The Minister reassured tourist guides of the government's dedication to addressing their concerns, including healthcare coverage and infrastructure development.
In response to the challenges raised, Minister Kairuki outlined government initiatives, including increased healthcare coverage and infrastructure projects funded through the national budget. She reaffirmed ongoing efforts to enhance working conditions, including training programs and employment contract negotiations.
The government's proactive stance in addressing the challenges facing tourist guides underscores its commitment to fostering the sustainability and growth of Tanzania's tourism industry.
