Somalia Officially Joins the East African Community: A Landmark Moment for Regional Integration

The Federal Republic of Somalia has officially become the 8th Partner State of the EAC. in a historic ceremony held at the East African Community (EAC) Headquarters in Arusha, Tanzania

This milestone moment marks Somalia's formal entry into one of Africa's most prominent regional economic blocs, signaling a new chapter in the country's journey towards regional integration and economic cooperation.

The ceremony, attended by dignitaries from across the region, saw Somalia's Minister of Commerce and Industry,  Jibril Abdirashid Haji Abdi, present the instrument of ratification of the Treaty of Accession to the EAC Secretary General, Dr. Peter Mathuki.

 This act not only completes the admission process but also underscores Somalia's commitment to deepening its ties with its East African neighbors.

Dr. Mathuki, in his address, emphasized the significance of Somalia's accession, highlighting the pivotal role the country will now play in shaping the future trajectory of the EAC. 

He outlined the roadmap for Somalia's integration into the Community, which includes commitments to the Customs Union, Common Market, Monetary Union, and eventual Political Federation.

The Secretary General also underscored the tangible benefits that Somalia stands to gain from its membership in the EAC, particularly in terms of regional infrastructure development. 

Projects such as roads, railways, and energy networks aim to enhance connectivity, facilitate trade, and stimulate economic growth, thereby contributing to Somalia's overall development agenda.

Furthermore, Somalia's strategic location, boasting the longest national coastline in Africa, presents immense opportunities for leveraging its blue economic resources and fostering intra-regional trade. 

Dr. Mathuki emphasized the importance of harnessing Somalia's potential to enhance the prosperity and well-being of all EAC member states and their citizens.

In his remarks, Jibril Abdirashid Haji Abdi reiterated Somalia's commitment to actively contributing to the EAC's objectives of promoting sustainable development, job creation, and improved living standards for all citizens.

He emphasized Somalia's readiness to collaborate with its East African counterparts, leveraging its strategic location and abundant resources for the collective benefit of the region.

Looking ahead, Somalia now faces the task of domesticating the Treaty of Accession within the stipulated timeframe of 12 months. 

Additionally, the country must designate a ministry to coordinate EAC matters, elect members to the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA), and appoint a judge to the East African Court of Justice (EACJ). These steps are essential to ensuring Somalia's full participation in the activities and programs of the EAC.

The ceremony concluded with a symbolic gesture as the flag of the Federal Republic of Somalia was raised at the EAC Headquarters, signifying Somalia's formal entry into the Community.
