In a heartbreaking incident at Ng'alita Mine in Bariadi District, Simiyu region, more than 21 small-scale gold miners have lost their lives after being buried under debris. The tragedy unfolded as reports suggest the miners illegally entered the mine, which had suspended operations at the time.

The incident occurred at 05 a.m. on January 13, 2024. Following the accident, President Samia Suluhu Hassan conveyed sincere condolences to the families and friends affected by this devastating event. She stated that security forces, in collaboration with regional leadership, are tirelessly working to recover additional bodies trapped in the wreckage.

ially, we were informed that there were 19 to 20 individuals trapped in the mines, but unfortunately, we ended up recovering 22 bodies," said Simon Simalenga, the district commissioner of Bariadi in the region, speaking to the Reuters news agency.

He mentioned that the group had started mining activities in the rich mineral area approximately three weeks ago before the government implemented safety procedures.

The area had been restricted due to ongoing heavy rainfall.

"A regional mining officer visited them and prevented them from mining since they were not following the required procedures," Mr. Simalenga stated.

It is reported that the miners clandestinely entered the mine against regulations, as mining activities had been temporarily halted. The President emphasized the importance of adhering to safety guidelines and vowed to investigate the circumstances leading to the unauthorized entry.

The search and rescue efforts are ongoing to retrieve bodies from the rubble, with authorities urging caution due to the unstable conditions of the mine. The tragic incident serves as a somber reminder of the risks associated with illegal mining activities and the critical need for stringent safety measures in the mining sector.
