Swahili wisdom says 'tembea uone' -walk and you will see, and that no journey is ever wasted. Near the Olduvai Gorge, within the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, there is a wonder that proves this truth: the Shifting Sands.
Beside the cradle of human history, a crescent-shaped dune of black sand slowly journeys across the land. Each year, thousands of visitors come not to collect the elusive black sand, but to stand in awe of it. This sand, darkened by iron minerals and volcanic ash from eruptions of Mount Oldoinyo Lengai, is alive with movement.
Driven by the wind, the dune advances quietly, about 15 to 29 metres each year, rising nearly five metres high and stretching a hundred metres wide. It moves without hurry, without noise, teaching patience to those who stop to watch.
These are the wonders of Ngorongoro. If you wish to understand them, walk and see, for the pride of the eyes is in seeing, and that pride never empties the shop.
