Kenyan President William Ruto has promised to put an end to the increasing cases of abductions, which have drawn widespread condemnation from human rights groups, lawyers, and politicians in the country.
The worrying trend has seen numerous individuals allegedly detained illegally, with accusations directed at security officers in the East African nation.
The abductions have escalated particularly following anti-government protests that took place in June and July this year, where protesters voiced their dissatisfaction with Ruto's administration.
Recent abductions have mostly targeted young people who have criticized the President on social media, with human rights groups voicing their concerns over the issue.
These groups have also been critical of the police, who have denied any involvement in the abductions, calling for swift action to be taken to investigate the matter.
Speaking to a crowd in Homa Bay on Friday, Ruto assured Kenyans that his government would take decisive measures to end abductions, while also urging parents to take responsibility for the upbringing of their children.
“We will put an end to abductions so that young people can live in peace,” Ruto stated, according to local media reports.
The President's remarks come at a time when public confidence in the security forces has been shaken, as allegations of extrajudicial detentions and disappearances continue to surface. Human rights organizations have been calling for accountability and an end to the practice, which they argue violates the rights of citizens and fosters a climate of fear.
Despite the ongoing criticism, the Kenyan government maintains that it is committed to addressing security concerns, while also balancing the need for law and order. However, for many Kenyans, the recent events have raised questions about the safety of individuals who speak out against the government, and whether the authorities will take meaningful action to curb such unlawful practices.
Ruto's pledge to end the abductions remains to be seen, with many awaiting further measures from his administration to ensure that the rule of law is upheld and citizens' rights are protected.
