A total of 1,066.105 kilograms of narcotics were seized, along with 447 milliliters of medical narcotic substances, and 157.4 acres of cannabis farms were destroyed.

Additionally, 19,804 liters of precursor chemicals were confiscated, and 58 suspects were apprehended during a nationwide crackdown.

The Drug Control and Enforcement Authority (DCEA) conducted these operations between October and November 2024 across various regions in Tanzania. Among the seized drugs, 687.32 kilograms of skunk and one kilogram of hashish were discovered in Goba, Dar es Salaam, hidden in a suspect’s house.

“Investigations revealed that many skunk users are women who claim to use the drug for stress relief and recreational purposes,” a DCEA spokesperson said.

Skunk, a potent form of cannabis, poses significant health risks due to its high toxicity. Hashish, made from a combination of cannabis flowers and seed oil, releases harmful chemicals when smoked, which can rapidly lead to mental health disorders.

“In many communities, such mental health issues are often attributed to witchcraft,” the spokesperson added.

At Julius Nyerere International Airport, the DCEA intercepted 120 milliliters of Codeine, a medical narcotic substance, that was being smuggled out of the country. Additionally, 327 milliliters of Codeine were found at a suspect’s residence in Tabata Kinyerezi.

“These substances were illegally imported with counterfeit labels indicating they were pet bathing solutions to avoid detection,” authorities explained.

This incident underscores the ongoing challenge of the uncontrolled use of medical narcotics, driven by stringent drug control measures that have forced traders and users to seek alternative substances.

In Dodoma, two suspects, Suleiman Mbaruku Suleiman (known as Nyanda), 52, and Kimwaga Msobi Lazaro, 37, were arrested with 393 grams of heroin.

“Nyanda is known as a key figure in the drug trade in the region and has been under surveillance for an extended period,” an official stated.

Other regional operations resulted in the confiscation of 303.553 kilograms of cannabis, 103.8 grams of heroin, and 63 kilograms of khat in various locations.

“These achievements reflect our unwavering commitment to combating the drug problem and protecting the health and safety of Tanzanians,” the DCEA spokesperson emphasized.

The DCEA urges citizens to support these efforts by reporting drug traffickers and raising awareness to deter participation in drug trade and usage.
