Tanzania and Belarus Discuss Strengthening Economic Diplomacy and Mining Sector Cooperation

The Minister for Minerals, Anthony Mavunde, held discussions with the Belarusian Ambassador to Tanzania, Pavel Vziatkin, focusing on enhancing economic diplomacy and exploring opportunities in Tanzania's mining sector.

During the meeting, Ambassador Vziatkin emphasized that the purpose of his visit was to strengthen the economic ties between Belarus and Tanzania and to gain a deeper understanding of the opportunities available in Tanzania’s mining sector.

He also highlighted Belarus’s advancements in technology and the manufacturing of robust machinery, which can be utilized in mining operations.

Welcoming Ambassador Pavel, Minister Mavunde expressed that Tanzania is blessed with a variety of minerals, including metals, gemstones, and strategic minerals, presenting numerous opportunities for investors from Belarus.

"Tanzania is endowed with a wealth of mineral resources, and we invite investors from Belarus to take advantage of the investment opportunities available in our mining sector," Mavunde said.

He further explained that, under the leadership of President Samia Suluhu Hassan and her '4R' philosophy, Tanzania has established a conducive investment environment that continues to attract numerous investors.

"Through President Samia's 4R approach, we have laid a strong foundation for investment, and we welcome Belarusian investors to seize this opportunity," Mavunde added.

The minister also informed Ambassador Pavel that Tanzania has banned the export of raw minerals, creating a significant opportunity for investors to establish value-addition industries within the country.

In addition, Mavunde pointed out that while Tanzania boasts large-scale miners utilizing modern technology, there is also a significant number of small-scale miners who still rely on rudimentary tools.

He urged Belarus to consider producing affordable machinery to support these small-scale miners, who have continued to contribute substantially to the nation's economy.

"There is great potential for Belarus to manufacture low-cost machines that will facilitate the work of our small-scale miners," Mavunde noted.

Speaking on strategic and critical minerals, Mavunde revealed that there are over 12 mining projects in their final stages, which will soon commence production.

"Once these projects begin, Tanzania will cement its place as a leading producer of strategic and critical minerals in Africa," he remarked.

Concluding the meeting, Minister Mavunde invited investors and companies from Belarus to participate in the Tanzania Mining Investment Conference (TMIC), scheduled to take place from November 19 to 21, 2024, in Dar es Salaam.

"We look forward to welcoming Belarusian companies to the TMIC, where they will have the chance to explore the many opportunities available in Tanzania’s mining sector," Mavunde said.
