International Concerns Arise Over Violence Against Activists in Tanzania

The European Union Heads of Mission, alongside the British High Commission, the Canadian High Commission, and the Embassies of Norway and Switzerland, have jointly expressed deep concern over recent incidents of violence, disappearances, and deaths targeting political and human rights activists in Tanzania.

In a statement issued on 10th September 2024, the international representatives extended their condolences to the affected families and called for a comprehensive investigation into the troubling events.

The statement emphasized the need for the Tanzanian government to uphold the protection of opposition parties, as outlined in President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan's "4R" plan.

The diplomatic missions also stressed the importance of safeguarding fundamental rights such as freedom of expression, urging Tanzanian authorities to hold those responsible accountable.

These incidents have raised significant concerns about the potential threat to democratic values and the rights of citizens in a country widely respected for its peace and stability.

The statement echoes President Samia's call for an immediate investigation, underscoring the need to preserve Tanzania’s reputation for peace and unity amidst growing fears of instability.
