Zanzibar Tourism Commission Imposes Fine on Tour Company for Ramadan Violation

The Zanzibar Tourism Commission, in its public statement, announced that it has fined Francophone Tours and Travel Company five hundred dollars, equivalent to one million two hundred and eighty-four thousand Tanzanian shillings, for violating its guidelines by allowing tourists to eat publicly during the holy month of Ramadan.

The official statement from the Commission stated, "Despite issuing guidelines instructing tourism businesses to adhere to, the company allowed guests to publicly eat, thus the Commission has taken the following actions... It has imposed a fine of $500 and immediately suspended the tour guide of the company, Khamis M. Kahogo, for a period of three months from engaging in any tourism-related activities."

"The Zanzibar Tourism Commission emphasizes the importance of respecting the customs and traditions of the Zanzibar islands, especially during the Ramadan period, to foster good relations with the surrounding communities," the statement concluded.
