New Curriculum to Help Children Learn Practically

Education, Science, and Technology Minister Prof. Adolf Mkenda has stated that the new curriculum introduced this year will aid children in learning through practical experience, enabling them to either self-employ or seek employment upon leaving school.

Speaking in Dar es Salaam on March 7, 2024, during a training session on the new curriculum for editors and journalists from various media outlets, Prof. Mkenda emphasized the importance of the new curriculum in imparting practical skills to children. He mentioned that the curriculum, which has been implemented from preschool to third grade, ensures that children have the ability to either start their own businesses or seek employment after completing their education.

"The curriculum requires children to study for 10 years; it is mandatory for them to complete secondary education," he said.

Additionally, the new curriculum emphasizes both practical and theoretical subjects, allowing children to choose their areas of interest. Prof. Mkenda highlighted that children who opt for practical subjects will have the opportunity to become self-employed upon completing their education.

Furthermore, the curriculum includes entrepreneurship education, with specialized teachers being trained to deliver this subject. Prof. Mkenda explained that students who pursue practical subjects will undergo three years of higher education and receive a certificate upon completion, along with a Vocational Education and Training Authority (Veta) certificate.

Secretary-General of the Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology, Prof. Caloryne Nombo, mentioned that the implementation of the curriculum aligns with the government's education policy reforms. She emphasized the collaborative effort involved in the policy's development, as directed by President Samia Suluhu Hassan.

"We have engaged with Tanzanian society regarding this policy, and after approval by the cabinet, we urge the media to help disseminate information about the new curriculum to the public, as we believe in its influential power," Prof. Nombo said.

The education policy focuses on seven key areas, including the education and training system, educational opportunities, quality of education and training, human resources, management and operation, financing system, and cross-cutting issues.

Additionally, the curriculum will focus on nurturing and developing talents and skills within the education system.
