EALA EULOGIZE THE LATE MAGUFULI FOR BOLD ECONOMIC REFORMS

The East African Legislative Assembly (Eala) has passed a Motion to eulogize the fallen President John Pombe Magufuli for bold economic reforms before his demise.

These include reforming the extractive industry and control of government expenditure tangible measures to protect the natural resources.

In a Resolution passed during the virtual sitting of the House on Wednesday this week, the lawmakers said the late Tanzanian Head of State made innovative solutions for the country's economic sector.

"In the past five years, he achieved global recognition  for his vision, ethical standards and innovative solutions for Tanzania", they said in a Motion moved by George Stephen Odongo, an MP from Uganda.

The late President Magufuli passed away due to heart complications on March 17th this year at Mzena hospital in Dar es Salaam where he was being treated.

He was buried on March 26th in his home town of Chato in Geita region and succeeded by his Vice President Ms Samia Suluhu Hassan who was sworn in on March 19th.

Eala said the late Tanzanian leader meticulously spearheaded policies which enormously benefited the country's economy, citing the control and protection of natural resources.

It cited the enactment of three mineral laws as well as reforming the extractive industry and establishment of an anti-corruption court.

The reforms have also resulted in connectivity of about 80 percent of all Tanzanian villages to electricity and 72 per cent of all urban areas to the national power grid.

In the East African Community (EAC) process, Dr. Magufuli exhibited "strong commitment  and faith by contributing immensely to the regional leadership and development.

The EAC eulogized the former Tanzanian leader  for his spirited efforts in the country's infrastructure development, especially in the construction and upgrading of roads, ports and airports.

It said although it was saddened by his death, it appreciated the smooth transition of power in Tanzania following the president's death.

"The smooth transition is evidence of the culture of democracy, constitutionalism and good governance that is taking root in our region", said the secretary general Liberat Mfumukeko.

He said in his congratulatory message to President Samia, that the peaceful transfer of power was not just a win for Tanzania but for the entire  EAC.

On his part, the incoming EAC secretary general and current CEO of the East African Business Council (EABC) Peter Mathuki has promised to work in harmony with President Samia.

He said early this week in a statement that he expected the new Tanzanian head of state will promote the private sector as an engine of socio-economic growth in the region.

He said he was confident that the new Tanzanian leader would enhance  regional integration among the six partner states in the EAC bloc.
