Maasai Youth in Ngorongoro Urge Government to Halt Livestock Seizures and Release 1,727 Animals Held in Pololeti Reserve

A group of Maasai youth from Ngorongoro District has called on the government to halt the confiscation of livestock and release the 1,727 animals they are currently holding, claiming they grazed in the Pololeti Game Reserve.

The youth stated that the court had already nullified the use of the reserve and allowed herders to use it for grazing purposes.

The detained livestock comprise 754 cattle from Ololosokwan ward and 327 cattle, goats, and sheep from Arash ward.

Reading a statement on behalf of the Loliondo residents in front of the press in Arusha on October 10, Ezekiel Sumare expressed concerns about the disregard for court orders by some government officials in the district.

He mentioned that following the court's order to suspend the proclamation of President No. 604 of 2022, the reserve authorities continued to impound and detain livestock in various areas of Loliondo. A total of 1,727 animals, including 1,081 cattle, 345 goats, and 300 sheep, were seized for allegedly entering the Pololeti reserve.

Sayori Latajewo emphasized that the court had clearly stated that the people of Loliondo have the right to use the reserve for grazing their livestock, and the community is essentially complying with what the court has approved. However, they are puzzled as to why livestock continues to be confiscated.

Arkayai Osiringeti, a resident of Arash, lamented the suffering of the community due to the unlawful detention of their livestock by the Ngorongoro Conservation Authority for four consecutive days, urging them to release the animals without any conditions.

The youth stressed that all branches of government should acknowledge that the people of Loliondo in Ngorongoro District have the freedom to conduct livestock grazing activities, as per the court's judgment on the community's application concerning GN 604 in case number 178 of 2022. The judgment had directed authorities not to disturb the com(munity in the Pololeti area.
