AMERICAN WASTE SOLUTION FIRM ENTERS AFRICAN MARKET

Massive garbage choking the African cities will be tackled, thanks to the entry of a US waste solutions firm.

PANELTECH US Corp on Monay signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to bring  new technologies in waste management.

The agreement was signed in Nairobi by the firm with Pan-African Climate Justice Alliance (Pacja) which is spearheading the drive for garbage-free cities.

Under the MoU, PANELTECH will help Africa tap into the expertise on waste management the firm brings on board.

The partnership will see PANELTECH spread its 'circular economy' model across Africa, where cities have been choked by tonnes of garbage.

Leiven Tsai, the firm's CEO said the drive is also aimed to fulfil the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) on circular economy.

That is an economic system focused at eliminating waste and the continual use of resources through recycling and reuse.

Dr. Mithika Mwenda, the executive secretary of the Climate Alliance said circular economy and waste management are well articulated in the Paris Agreement on Climate Change.

Dar es Salaam and Nairobi cities generate 4,252 tonnes and 2,475 tonnes of solid waste a day respectively while Lagos generates 7,000 tonnes.

This is the waste that PANELTECH hopes to repurpose", Dr. Mwenda said, calling for further support to get the African cities of filth.

The Nairobi-based Pacja is a consortium that brings together more than 1,000 organizations spanning 48 African countries.

With the sealing of the partnership with the American firm yesterday, the latter hopes to tap in the existing networks to strengthen the green circular model.
