EA LAW BODY RESUMES BUSINESS WITH NEW OFFICIALS

After months of Covid-19 related disruptions, the East African Law Society (EALS) is back in business but with new leadership.

While the premier bar association in the region had a new President since last November, the chief executive officer exited two weeks ago.

"I have since retired and am currently handing over", said Hanningtone Amol in a communication sent to the media early this week.

Sources said he exited because his contract had come to an end.The Kenyan lawyer took over as the CEO of the regional law body in August 2017.

The premier bar association in the region based in Arusha had its activities disrupted by the outbreak of Covid-19 for months until very recently

In Mr. Amol's place, David Sigano had been appointed the CEO in acting capacity. Until then, he was the organization's programme manager.

"I am currently acting until a substantive CEO is appointed", he said, affirming that the Society has resumed full operations after months of disruptions, including temporary closures.

The new team also includes Bernard Oundo, a Ugandan advocate, who was elected the President of the Society during the elections conducted online in November last year.

EALS, which has an observer status to the East African Community (EAC), has members from Tanzania Mainland, Zanzibar, Uganda, Kenya, Burundi, Rwanda and South Sudan.

Mr. Oundo, who is the Managing Partner of the Kampala-based Citadel Advocates, took over from Willy Rubeya from Burundi as President and will serve for two years.

Mr. Sigano said although they had resumed "full operations" after pandemic-related closures, they will continue to reach out to their members through webinar links.

"We recently launched an online payment platform where members can easily pay their subscription fees", he said.

Some of the key services delivered virtually include training and membership engagement as well as regular meetings and advocacy.

EALS is the regional bar representing lawyers from across the six member countries of the six nation Community.

With a membership of over 17,000 lawyers, it is the leading non-governmental organization among the apex bodies of the EAC.

It was founded in 1995 by a group of lawyers in the region with the support of leadership of the national bar associations of the member states.
