Tanzanian Tourism Company Director Praises Government for Road Improvements in Serengeti National Park

John Macha, the Managing Director of Wolway Trekking Tanzania Limited, has commended the government and TANAPA for their efforts to improve the roads affected by heavy rains and the high volume of tourist vehicles.

The road in question sees approximately 300 to 500 tourist vehicles passing through daily. Macha expressed his appreciation during a press conference held at the site, attended by the Commissioner for Conservation of the Tanzania National Parks Authority (TANAPA), Nassoro Juma Kuji, who was inspecting ongoing repairs on the Naabi to Seronera road.

Macha suggested that the government should consider constructing a durable, hard-surfaced road in the park as a long-term solution to the persistent road issues. He stated, “I commend the government for the road repairs from Seronera to Golini. We understand that this is a significant task, and we urge you to continue with these efforts.

However, for a permanent solution, having a durable hard surface road would be highly beneficial. This would prevent the need for frequent repairs, which can be costly in the long run.”

On January 26, 2024, TANAPA’s Commissioner for Conservation, Nassoro Juma Kuji, visited the Serengeti National Park to inspect the infrastructure and instructed the park’s management to address the problematic road areas swiftly to ensure tourists can visit the park without difficulties.

Commissioner Kuji emphasized the urgency of the repairs, stating, “Despite the ongoing heavy rains, we cannot wait for them to end. We are committed to addressing the problematic areas urgently. The main goal is to ensure that the roads have a durable hard surface. These are my instructions to the management to ensure all roads remain passable at all times.”

He also thanked the government for providing funds to repair infrastructure significantly affected by the heavy rains sweeping across the country. Kuji added that TANAPA is doing everything possible to upgrade all national park infrastructures to meet the expectations of visitors.

Furthermore, Assistant Commissioner of Conservation responsible for infrastructure, Engineer Dr. Richard Matolo, mentioned that the agency has been exploring various technologies to tackle road challenges and has noted that this year’s conditions have been particularly difficult due to the heavy rains. He said, “The agency has tried various approaches and technologies to ensure the Naabi road remains passable. Research has shown that while traditional methods may not be effective due to the park’s soil composition, using a hard surface layer has proven successful.”

Stephen Msumi, the Chief Park Warden for Serengeti National Park, assured that the park management is focused on fixing problematic areas and urged tour guides to adhere to park regulations, including speed limits, to avoid potential issues.

The Serengeti National Park has recently faced road challenges due to the heavy rains damaging the infrastructure. The ongoing repairs by TANAPA are expected to alleviate these issues and ensure that all park roads are accessible year-round.
