Enhancement of Voter Registry Using Mobile Phones

The National Electoral Commission (NEC) has introduced a new method for voters to update or transfer their information in the Permanent Voter Registry using their mobile phones.

According to a public statement signed by the Director of Elections at NEC, Kailima Ramadhani, on July 18, 2024, this decision follows extensive stakeholder consultations. Starting July 20, 2024, individuals with basic mobile phones (commonly known as feature phones) wishing to update or transfer their voter details can do so by dialing USSD Code *152*00#, selecting option 9, and following further instructions on their respective devices.

The statement outlines that voters using this method will receive a special token on their phones, which they must bring to their intended polling station during the 2025 General Election to complete the process and receive a new voter card.

Additionally, NEC has launched a toll-free Voter Assistance Call Centre effective today, Thursday, July 18, 2024. The centre will operate daily from 12:00 PM to 2:00 AM, offering free services to assist citizens with queries related to voter registry improvements.

"We encourage all citizens to utilize this service throughout the voter registry improvement period," stated in the public notice.
