 Progress and Commitment: Strengthening Cross-Border Trade between Uganda and South Sudan



Representing the South Sudan Minister of Trade and Industry, Hon. Simon Nyang emphasized the urgency of implementing decisions without relying on OSBP structures.


Addressing the OSBP review meeting, Hon. Nyang highlighted the Ministry's dedication to implementing the meeting's recommendations promptly.



Uganda’s 1st Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of EAC Affairs, Hon. Rebecca Kadaga, commended the collaborative efforts of border agencies in facilitating trade.


Hon. Kadaga stressed the importance of South Sudan expediting the implementation of the EAC Customs Union Protocol for the benefit of its citizens.


She urged South Sudan to seek support from the EAC Secretariat in areas where legislative frameworks are pending.


Hon. Kadaga reaffirmed Uganda’s commitment to fostering collaboration between border agencies of both Partner States.


She emphasized the necessity of collective efforts to navigate integration complexities and ensure tangible benefits for the populace.


The Elegu/Nimule border mission exemplified Uganda and South Sudan's shared commitment to bolstering cross-border trade and regional cooperation.


Stakeholder engagements were preceded by inspections of the Elegu and Nimule OSBPs, demonstrating a hands-on approach to enhancing trade facilitation.


Overall, the statements reflect a concerted effort to enhance trade facilitation and regional integration between Uganda and South Sudan, underlining the significance of collaborative approaches in achieving these goals.
