Drug Control Authority Seizes Over 54,500 Kilograms of Narcotics

The Drug Control and Enforcement Authority (DCEA) has achieved a significant milestone by intercepting a total of 54,506.553 kilograms of narcotics.

Among the seized substances is 4.623 kilograms of a novel drug known as methylene dioxy pyrovalerone (MDPV).

Commissioner General of DCEA, Aretas Lyimo, made this announcement during a press briefing held in Dar es Salaam on April 4, 2024.

Speaking to reporters, Lyimo highlighted the potency and dangers associated with MDPV, describing it as a highly stimulating substance with rapid effects compared to other drugs. He revealed that the drug is often distributed through online platforms and concealed using deceptive labels such as bath salts, Ivory Wave, and Vanilla Sky.

The operation, which spanned across various regions including Shinyanga, Tabora, Iringa, Mbeya, Arusha, and Dar es Salaam, resulted in the apprehension of 72 individuals involved in drug trafficking.

Some of the suspects have already been brought before the courts for prosecution.

In addition to the narcotics seizure, the authority also destroyed 262 acres of marijuana farms, further disrupting the illegal drug trade.

The successful operation underscores the commitment of DCEA, in collaboration with other law enforcement agencies and forestry authorities, to combat drug trafficking and safeguard public health and safety.
