Call for Action Against Gender-Based Violence Gains Momentum in Tanzania

Development partners, in collaboration with the Government, are urging the community to strongly condemn acts of violence perpetrated by some individuals, leading to an erosion of morals and leaving families devoid of proper upbringing, resulting in dependency.

During a visit by Gender-Based Violence Advocates from Ethiopia to the Information and Knowledge Center in Majohe Ward, Rehema Mwateba, a Member of the Tanzania Gender Network Programme (TGNP), emphasized the need to speak truthfully about the violence being perpetrated.

Tabu Ally, Chairperson of the Information and Knowledge Center in Majohe Ward, stressed the importance of taking legal action against perpetrators and urged the government to enact strict laws against those engaging in unfriendly acts within communities.

Efforts are needed from various development stakeholders and the government to educate those with limited understanding of human rights issues to reduce acts of violence. Public servants, including Ministers and Members of Parliament, are urged to witness escalating violence, particularly against young girls.

Wivina Alkadi, a resident of Kivule Majohe Ward, appealed for community assistance as she faces difficult circumstances after her husband was sentenced to 60 years in prison for violence against her and their children.

Additionally, she appealed to President Samia Suluhu Hassan and Tanzanians to assist her children in continuing their education.

Gender-Based Violence Advocates from Ethiopia pledged continued support to TGNP in providing economic empowerment to women, complementing efforts made by stakeholders and the government to address issues of violence and economically empower women.
