Students at the Nelson Mandela African Institution of Science and Technology (NM-AIST) are on the offensive in technological innovations.
They have developed a smart liquified petroleum gas (LPG) stove as part of a digital transformation that will link academia and the industry.
"The gadget can contribute to environmental protection and prevention of air pollution", said Alexandre Niyomugaba, one of the innovators.
He added; "It can allow the user to cook remotely and can detect the gas leakage with real-time protection and notification".
This is among the digital systems developed at the Centre of Excellence for Information and Communication Technologies in East Africa (Cenit@EA).
The facility is hosted at the Arusha-based Pan African university through the support of the German aid and Academic Exchange Service agencies; GIZ and DAAD.
Through the Mobile and Embedded Systems (EMoS),the students from the East African Community (EAC) region are trained on a raft of smart technologies.
The facility is geared to become a regional hub, offering skills to create innovations that are crucial for the development of the region.
Mr.Niyomugaba from Rwanda said introduction of the LPG stove will contribute to saving trees for charcoal and pollution control.
He could not say how many such stoves have been made but noted that the aim was to introduce them to the market "so that people are encouraged to use them".
Mr. Daudi Flavian, a Tanzanian student in the programme, is upbeat on the EMoS applications, saying it has immensely helped the young IT learners.
"EMoS enhances solution-oriented thinking in order to help students create innovations that boost the East African economy", he explained.
Todate,116 students from the six EAC partner states have been enrolled at NM-AIST for the programme (EMoS) that started in 2017.
Another sponsor of the programme is the Inter-University Council of East Africa (IUCEA),an institution of the EAC based in Kampala, Uganda.
He said entrepreneurial and soft skills training offered under EMoS applications will enable the students to develop the digital solutions "that are crucial for the transformation of industries and the development of the region".,
