The victims of the disaster that occurred in the Hanang district of the Manyara region on December 3 this year have continued to receive and benefit from various humanitarian aid provided by partners and the government.
The government has increased the distribution of aid to households due to the ongoing influx of assistance from various partners.
Initially, the government distributed essential supplies such as flour, rice, wheat flour, cooking oil, sugar, beans, enough to sustain them for a month. Additionally, non-food items like mattresses, blankets, clothes, and various household items were provided. However, the beneficiaries are now experiencing increased relief as additional aid from partners and an expanded government distribution effort have taken place.
Speaking to the Government Spokesperson, Mr. Mobhare Matinyi, who spent the entire day on Saturday, December 23, 2023, visiting various aid distribution centers, the victims expressed their satisfaction with the aid received. They thanked all contributors and the government for coordinating and overseeing the entire aid distribution process.
Thomas Gabriel Thomas, a resident of Katesh A with a family of nine, whose house was filled with mud, resulting in the loss of some belongings including food, expressed gratitude for the initial government assistance.
He highlighted the recent call from the government to the Ganana Primary School distribution center for additional aid, which included 300 kilograms of sugar, 125 kilograms of flour, 300 kilograms of corn, eight blankets, 20 liters of cooking oil, eight mats, eight mattresses, laundry soap, eggs, nutrition flour for children, and a five-kilogram gas stove.
Innocent Desdery from the heavily affected Gendabi Village, which suffered from mudslides accompanied by rocks and logs, mentioned that the aid they received surpassed their expectations. After the first distribution, they were informed to go to distribution centers to receive more aid, including 300 kilograms of corn, 150 kilograms of wheat flour, 300 kilograms of corn flour, 150 kilograms of rice, over 100 kilograms of sugar, four mattresses, 30 kilograms of beans, 76 liters of cooking oil, and various items such as mosquito nets, hoes, soap, gas stoves, toothpaste, salt, milk, and bottled drinking water.
After the Government Spokesperson's visit to aid distribution centers at Ganana Primary School, Katesh, and Gendabi Primary School, the Hanang District Commissioner, Ms. Janeth Mayanya, stated that various partners continue to deliver aid. The government will keep informing the victims to come to the distribution centers as aid arrives because the disaster victims are the primary beneficiaries of the assistance.
She added that, in addition to humanitarian aid, the government, through the Prime Minister's Office, is coordinating the distribution of modern seeds and fertilizers to citizens whose fields were damaged by the heavy mudslides mixed with rocks and logs from Mount Hanang.
