An aviation body under the East African Community (EAC) has been voted the second best aviation agency in the world.
The Entebbe-based Civil Aviation Safety and Security Oversight Agency (Cassoa) came second out of the 17 organizations surveyed.
It excelled in safety and security areas in a vote by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).
This was announced at the weekend during the visit to the agency's headquarters in Entebbe by EAC secretary general Peter Mathuki.
During the visit, the agency's executive director Emily Nguza Arao briefed the visiting SG on the 14 year old Cassoa on its status.
"We had just been voted by Icao as the second best safety and security agency in the world out of 17 bodies", he said.
Cassoa was formed by the EAC in 2007 and mandated to make air transport in the region safe, efficient and profitable.
This has to be undertaken through harmonization of civil aviation rules and regulations and coordinate and cooperate in the maintenance of high security.
The agency also has to assist the EAC partner states develop appropriate infrastructure, aeronautical skills and technology for the purpose.
Mr. Nguza did not say as to when the voting took place and whether the EAC body was awarded for being voted the second best.
Cassoa was one of the EAC institutions in Uganda and Rwanda visited by Dr. Mathuki who assumed office on April 23rd this year.
The others are the East African Science and Technology Commission (Easteco) which is based in Kigali, Rwanda.
Also visited were the Inter University Council of East Africa (IUCEA), also based in Uganda alongside two more regional bodies.
Dr. Mathuki urged the EAC institutions to focus on implementing their priorities as set out in the 5th EAC Development Strategy.
