Seven People Hospitalized in Fiji After Suspected Poisoning from Fruit Cocktail at Luxury Hotel Bar

 

Seven people, including five tourists, were hospitalized in Fiji after reportedly consuming a fruit cocktail at a five-star hotel bar and falling ill from suspected poisoning, local authorities have confirmed.

The tourists, ranging in age from 18 to 56, include one from the United States and others from Australia. Two additional victims are residents of Fiji, according to reports from local media citing the country's health ministry.

The incident comes just weeks after six tourist deaths in Laos, Southeast Asia, attributed to methanol poisoning.

Brent Hill, the CEO of Tourism Fiji, told RNZ that while they were aware of the Laos tragedy, the situation in Fiji is "far different from that incident."

Shortly after drinking the beverage at the Warwick Fiji Hotel on the Coral Coast, the guests began experiencing symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and sensory system issues.

Initially taken to Sigatoka Hospital, they were later transferred to Lautoka Hospital, according to the Fiji Times.

An investigation is ongoing, and no further cases have been reported, the authorities said.
