The Minister of Community Development, Gender, Women, and Special Groups, Dr. Dorothy Gwajima, has called on stakeholders to work together in developing strategies to combat online child abuse.
Dr. Gwajima made the remarks on December 17, 2024, in Dodoma while inaugurating the National Advisory Committee on Online Child Safety.
She highlighted the importance of the Committee in advising the government on the best approaches to protect children from online abuse.
"This crucial Committee comprises experts from various sectors, including Directors of relevant ministries and technology specialists, to offer effective advice on tackling online child abuse," said Dr. Gwajima.
Dr. Gwajima also shared Tanzania’s efforts to address online child abuse on a global stage.
"Tanzania had the opportunity to present its initiatives at the Online Child Safety Conference held on December 4-5, 2024, in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates," she noted.
During the conference, Dr. Gwajima met with the Director General of WeProtect Global Alliance and shared Tanzania’s priorities, including the need for a 'kids SIM card'—a technology aimed at protecting children from online harm.
Sebastian Kitiku, Director of the Child Development Department at the Ministry, reiterated the Committee's role in addressing challenges surrounding online child abuse.
"This Committee is crucial for the well-being of children in Tanzania. We are here to evaluate our progress and identify ways to improve efforts to combat online child abuse," said Kitiku.
Children from the Dodoma Regional Children's Council also expressed their commitment to using the knowledge gained to educate their peers.
"We will share this education in schools and other areas to help children understand and avoid online abuse," they stated.
