CAMEROON ADVOCATE TO HEAD PAN AFRICAN LAW BODYL

A prominent lawyer from Cameroon has been elected the new President of the Pan African Lawyers' Union (Palu).

The 55 year old Kari Abdoul Bagwi will head the Arusha-based legal facility for a period of three years.

This was announced  in Arusha last week at the end of the body's general annual conference and Triennial General Assembly held in the city.

"I will continue where others ended", he told this blog, pledging to address the resource constraints, among others.

He succeeds Chief Emeka Obegolu from Nigeria whose term is from 2018 but extended for one more year due to the outbreak of Covid-19.

Bagwi has been at the helm of the premier bar association in the continent since 2014, twice serving as Palu's secretary general.

The President of Palu is not only mandated to preside over the organization's activities and leadership.

He or she will represent the body before the global organizations such as the United Nation, the African Union, the European Union and others on matters pertaining to law.

With the assistance of other key officials, he will oversee prudent investments that are necessary to sustain the activities of the organization.

The Tanganyika Law Society (TLS) is an automatic member of Palu's board, Tanzania being a host nation.

Speaking to reporters, TLS President Prof Edward Hosea stressed the need to sensitize the people on the legal facility.

The Assembly also elected Ms Joyce Oduah from Nigeria as the secretary general of the continental body of lawyers.
