The Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority (NCAA) concluded its commemoration of World Rangers Day with a series of community-centered activities and sporting events in Karatu District, Arusha Region. The events were organized to honor the dedication and sacrifices of wildlife rangers while strengthening community relations and environmental conservation.
As part of the celebrations, the NCAA led a tree-planting exercise at Welwel Secondary School, held awareness campaigns on conservation and environmental protection, and organized friendly sports competitions. These included a five-kilometer run and football matches featuring rangers from the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, rangers from Pololeti Game Reserve, and officers from Karatu District Police.
“NCAA is part of the community. In carrying out our duties, we work closely with other institutions including the Police Force in Karatu and Ngorongoro Districts, as well as the local communities. That is why today we organized sports activities like jogging, physical exercises, and football – to foster unity and strengthen our shared role in protecting national resources,” said Commissioner Abdulrazak Badru of the NCAA.
Commissioner Badru further emphasized that NCAA has a responsibility to promote environmental awareness and community-based conservation. As part of the day's program, the authority distributed free tree seedlings to local residents and planted several at Welwel Secondary School. The commissioner also spoke to students and teachers, encouraging them to take care of the trees and maintain a clean and green school environment.
“NCAA also has the duty to provide environmental education and promote participatory conservation to communities surrounding the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. That’s why, on this special day, we planted trees and distributed seedlings to locals to support environmental restoration efforts,” he added.
Representing the Karatu District Commissioner, District Administrative Secretary Mr. Bahati Mfungo praised NCAA’s ongoing collaboration with the community.
“We sincerely appreciate the role that NCAA continues to play in Karatu, especially in educating our people on environmental protection, managing human-wildlife conflict, and supporting community development projects. Such initiatives are vital for sustainable conservation,” he said.
World Rangers Day, first observed in 2007, aims to honor rangers worldwide who have died or suffered injuries in the line of duty. This year’s theme, “Rangers: Powering Transformative Conservation,” underscores the pivotal role that wildlife rangers play in leading real, impactful change in natural resource conservation — a legacy that benefits both the nation and future generations.
