The Minister of Natural Resources and Tourism, Ambassador Dr. Pindi Chana, met with a delegation from the Lusaka Agreement Taskforce (LATF) to discuss efforts in combating poaching and illegal wildlife and forestry trade across borders.
The meeting took place on February 17, 2025, in Dar es Salaam, with the LATF delegation led by its Executive Director, Edward Phiri, from the organization’s headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya.
As an active member of the Lusaka Agreement, Tanzania has benefited from various initiatives, including over 15 operations against illegal wildlife and forestry trade.
"Several suspects have been arrested with various illegal wildlife products in operations coordinated by the Lusaka Agreement Secretariat," said Dr. Chana.
She further acknowledged the role of the Lusaka Agreement in strengthening the capacity of law enforcement officers and emphasized Tanzania’s commitment to wildlife conservation.
"Under the leadership of the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism, we are utilizing all possible legal frameworks at national, regional, and international levels to protect our wildlife resources," she stated.
As a dedicated member of the Lusaka Agreement, Tanzania is set to host the 14th Governing Council Meeting of the agreement in May 2025.
LATF Executive Director Edward Phiri expressed gratitude for Tanzania’s commitment to hosting the upcoming meeting.
"During this session, the Minister of Natural Resources will assume the role of Chair of the Governing Council, taking over from Kenya’s Minister of Natural Resources, whose term is coming to an end," he said.
The meeting was attended by officials from the Wildlife Division, Tanzania Wildlife Management Authority (TAWA), and Tanzania Forest Services (TFS).
