The small town of Mirerani in Simanjiro District, Manyara Region, is set to benefit from a Sh8.3 billion ($3.5 million) water project aimed at providing clean and safe water to Tanzanite miners. The announcement was made by Justin Rujomba, the Executive Director of the Arusha Urban Water Supply and Sanitation Authority (AUWSA), during a press briefing on the plans to address the water needs of miners in Mirerani.
Rujomba revealed that once the funds are secured, they will commence with the infrastructure development required for water supply, following a thorough study conducted by experts. The project is designed to meet a directive from the Simanjiro District Commissioner, Fakii Lulandala, to deliver water to Tanzanite miners within seven days.
The project will be executed in two phases. The short-term plan involves using water trucks to deliver water, while the long-term plan will establish a piped water system. The $3.5 million investment is expected to provide a sustainable solution for accessing clean and safe water at the Tanzanite mining sites.
In the interim, water will be transported by trucks carrying 10,000-liter tanks, adhering to government-set pricing regulated by the Energy and Water Utilities Regulatory Authority (EWURA). The trucks will source water from Mirerani and distribute it within the mining perimeter.
Following this, the long-term plan will be put into action, involving the installation of water infrastructure funded by the $3.5 million.
Simanjiro District Commissioner Fakii Lulandala emphasized that AUWSA has been given a seven-day deadline to ensure water reaches the miners and residents within the mining walls. After this period, the focus will shift to ensuring a reliable supply of clean and safe water.
Bahati Mushi, a Tanzanite mine owner, welcomed the initiative, highlighting that access to water is crucial for the miners' well-being. Mushi also praised Minister for Water, Jumaa Aweso, for his efforts in improving water access across various regions.
